Traditional Chinese Name:  

山楂红枣茶 (shān zhā hóng zǎo chá)

 

This nice slightly sweet and very tart tea was introduced by my herbalist who suggested I make it for my dad (while he was visiting HK). The tea is designed for people who would like to lose weight, reduce the fat content in their bodies, reduce blood pressure, reduce cholesterol and help clear the blood of the impurities that come with a not so healthy diet. That’s not to say my dad’s not healthy, but he does enjoy all foods – so this tea will help balance out a delicious, heavy meal and aid in digestion. The tea is super tart, so you can add either apples or a sprinkle of sugar to sweeten it up. It’s best drank either at room temperature or hot.

What’s involved?

Prep time: 5 mins

Cook time: 1 hour

Total time: 1 hour 5 mins

Serves: 4 cups of tea

Ingredients

Cooking Instructions

  1. Soak all the ingredients in warm water for about 5 minutes and rinse clean
  2. Boil your tea water
  3. When the water boils, add all the ingredients together (except the sugar)
  4. Keep covered on a small boil (medium heat) for about 1 hour
  5. Serve hot or warm and add sugar (as needed)

  • Helps reduce the fat content in the body
  • This red date and hawthorn tea will also help reduce blood pressure and bad cholesterol
  • It helps clear the blood of toxins
  • This tea is especially helpful after a meal and helps in digestion

Precautions

  • The hawthorn is especially tart and sour, so not everyone will like it like that
  • Take caution when adding sugar (as not to add too much)
  • Be sure to pit the dates (or use pitted dates). The pits are said to be “CHO” – which is very heaty, but not in a good way

Herbal Tea Name: Ladies’ Monthly Tea

Traditional Chinese Name: 女性恩物湯 (nǚ xìng ēn wù tāng)

This herbal tea is warming in nature and bitter to taste.

My herbalist recommended this “special ladies’ drink” or tea because I complained about an irregular period and serious cramps (almost death like). He’s suggested to make this drink in small portions, once a month and drink one cup a few days before my expected start days to help relieve the cramping, calm the body, and eliminate the wetness and then one more cup after the end of the period. Drink this for about 3 months and then see what happens. This is probably one of the more medicinal drinks I have posted and made and to be honest, it smells and tastes as bad as it looks. It’s quite bitter (and he did say to absolutely not add sugar – as it’s not needed) and has a very unique aftertaste. 

A lot of the ingredients listed here provide a few things:

  • They are primarily on the warming scale in nature
  • These ingredients support both blood replenishment (and Qi)
  • They help dispel wind, remove dampness from the body, and eliminate toxins

 

What’s involved?

Prep time: 5 mins

Cook time: 60 mins

Total time: 65 mins

Serves: 1 cup (for you!)

Ingredients

Cooking Instructions

  1. Soak all ingredients in warm water for ten minutes
  2. In a pot of 1.5 cups of boiling water, throw all the ingredients in together and cover
  3. Boil for an hour (while keeping it covered)
  4. This should make about 1 cups worth (for you and only you!)
  5. Serve warm and enjoy (as it is not recommended during menstruation cycles to drink cold things

Herbal teas is an amazing category of Chinese drinks that are more purposeful and intentional in its creation and consumption.  They aren’t always medicinal and have some more common ingredients that we always drink because they taste so good!
