How to make a warming mandarin and cinnamon Chinese herbal tea

Tea Name: Warming Mandarin and Cinnamon Chinese herbal tea (to dispel cold and wind)

Traditional Chinese Name: 保暖茶 (bǎo nuǎn chá) – direct translation here is “keep warm tea”. This is a very generic name for teas that keep you warm.

Nature:  Warming

Targets: Lungs, spleen,

Taste: Sweet

This warming tea is designed to:

  • eliminate wind from the body
  • warm the middle burner (lungs, chest)
  • promotes circulation of blood and qi
  • clears heat
  • helps heal and soothe the lungs
  • dispels coughs

You can also add ginger to the gentle warming tea to make it more “warm”.  The mandarin is slightly sweet along with the cinnamon, which adds a nice subtle spicy scent and flavor. If you’d like a little more sweetness, you can drizzle a little bit of honey. A soothing, delicious tea that you can drink over the winter cold months, especially after exposure to cold and wind.

What’s involved?

Prep time: 5 mins

Cook time: 10 mins (on medium high heat)

Total time: 15 mins

Serves: 2 cups

Ingredients

  • 1 medium sized mandarin, sliced
  • 15 dried apricot kernals
  • 5 dried licorice root
  • 1 dried cinnamon stick
  • 1 dried tangerine peel
  • 2-3 cups of water
  • optional: fresh sliced ginger
  • optional: honey

Cooking Instructions

  1. Slice the mandarin and squeeze out the top and bottom to remove the juice and break up the mandarin with a spoon or chopsticks to release the juices.
  2. Add in all the herbs and 2 cups of water.
  3. Boil on medium heat for 10 minutes.
  4. Set cool and add honey for taste. Serve and enjoy!

What you’ll need:

I use this stove top safe tea pot to make most of my Chinese teas. You can use the strainer as you wish, dish washer friendly, and super easy to use!

Licorice root comes in different sizes and shapes. I’ve found one on Amazon that works well in teas and soups!

Try these dried tangerine peels!  I like how they are already pre-sliced for teas, so the flavours will seep out more.  And you can portion what you want. This is a great product!
