How to make a warming herbal Chinese tea post cold weather exercise
Tea Name: Red dates and fresh ginger tea with cinnamon bark
Traditional Chinese Name: 紅棗薑茶 (hóng zǎo jiāng chá). The direct translation of this “red dates ginger tea”. This is a very common base tea with the red dates and ginger and you can add other complimentary herbs, such as any warming herbs (such as dried longans, dried cinnamon bark, honey, dried tangerine peel).
Nature: Warming
Taste: Sweet

How to best manage cold weather:
- The first and most prominent thing to address is the cold-wind that enters the lungs (not the body). It is through the lungs that these pathogens and excess yin first hit. The more strenuous the exercise, the faster your breathing, the higher the turnover of yin (especially in cold weather) into your body. Try to slow down the intake of yin into your lungs if you can. Meaning, run or ride slower… don’t do the high intensity workouts when it’s cold! Save that for indoors or when it’s warmer.
- Bundle your neck. Use neck warmers or scarves if you’re outside. There are a lot neck options for active people!
- Have a tea that addresses the lungs and can push out both wind and dampness (such as this one!) right after exercising. Don’t drink cold stuff either! I know you’ll be tempted to, but don’t… warm at least, please?
What’s involved?
Prep time: 2 mins
Cook time: 2 mins (steeped)
Total time: 4 mins
Serves: 1 cup
Ingredients
- 2-3 slices of fresh ginger
- 3-4 dried pitted red dates (slicing optional as this will release more flavors)
- 1 stick of dried cinnamon bark
- 1 cup of hot water
Cooking Instructions
- Peel and slice your ginger. I will use the knife to also scrape the peel off the ginger and slice thinly. You can add as much or as little as you like depending on the spicy preference.
- Add in dried red dates. Slicing is also optional as this will release more flavors.
- Drop in your dried cinnamon bark (or stick).
- Add in boiling water.
- Cover and steep for 2 minutes.
- Serve and enjoy!
- You can refill with boiling water around 3 times before the flavors run weak. Replenish any of the ingredients any time.
What you’ll need:
This is the glass with diffuser tea cup that I will sometimes use to separate the tea from the ingredients. Super easy to use, super easy to clean, and dishwashing friendly!
These are amazing dried red dates I also buy off Amazon (which have the seeds removed!) Perfect for teas and soups!
I also have a favourite, reliable, and popular dried cinnamon stick that I use for both soups, teas, baking, and stews! This is a great one because it’s comes in a package!
