When it’s hot, stuffy and the temperatures are blowing the thermometers through the roof, this deliciously sweet and tart tea is perfect for this type of weather!

The mercury hit 32 C yesterday and what better way to cool the body than with a cooling, sweet tea that can help reduce internal heat, clears and disperses dryness, and moistens the lungs and stomach.   

The amazing thing about this tea is that you can also enjoy the snow pear and apples as part of the tea.  With the right cook time of 10 minutes, parts of the fruit are still semi-crunchy!  So delicious!  And you don’t need to add any sugar or honey because of the natural sugars of the fruit.

Serves: 2 cups

Ingredients
Cooking Instructions
  1. Cut up your snow pears and apples into cubes, keeping the skin on.  This helps hold it together and not disintegrate, but actually, from a Traditional Chinese Medicine benefit perspective, it’s the skins that hold the most value!  I talk about this below a little more!
  2. In a stove top safe ceramic or glass pot, add all your ingredients together
  3. Boil on medium high for 10 minutes, or until it’s bubbling for at least a good 5 minutes to really get the flavours out
  4. Serve and enjoy!
  5. You don’t need to add any honey or sugars at all!  

Snow pear are amazing for cooling and moisturizing the body, targeting the lungs and stomach.  It’s perfect for yin deficiencies (which includes cough) and reducing fire in the body and lungs.

It’s actually the skin of the snow pear that has the most power!  That’s why I keep them on when I’m making a tea with them or a soup.  And they provide a good source of fiber for the body.

Alternatively, if you don’t eat snow pear skins when you’re having the fruit, I would suggest to keep the peeled skin to dry, or freeze in a ziploc to save for use in soups or teas, but you don’t need to eat them!

It seems that time of year again!  The kids (seems like the whole city) is down with a cough and respiratory illnesses.  Some symptoms include congestion in the chest (which is like a noisy cough basically) and lots of phlegm!

This sweet tea is perfect to support and reduce coughing, including getting rid of dampness in the lungs, and eliminating this phlegm build up. 

The key ingredients here are the apricot kernals, the dried tangerine peels, and the rock sugar to eliminate the phlegm, and the barley to eliminate dampness.

This is not a replacement for any medication or doctor recommendation.  I use this purely as supplemental.

 

What’s involved?

Prep time: 10 mins

Cook time: 15 mins

Total time: 25 mins

Serves: 2 cups

Ingredients

 

Cooking Instructions
  1. Soak the tangerine peel for at least an hour until it softens.  Slice thinly or you can keep the whole piece.   I slice it so that I can play around with taste and whether it’s too bitter or not, but this is purely experimental.  I would suggest using a small piece at first.
  2. Cube the fresh snow pear, keeping the skin on (make sure it’s washed).  I’ll only use half for this recipe (3 cups)
  3. Throw everything into a pot (or a boil safe tea pot like this one I found on amazon!)
  4. Boil on medium heat for 15 minutes
  5. Strain, serve and enjoy!
Any benefits?
  • This tea is slightly cooling and designed to target the lungs
  • It helps reduce cough, clear congestion in the lungs and chest area, eliminate phlegm and dampness
  • The power ingredient here is the dried tangerine peel and is definitely an acquired taste.  It’s quite pungent, so use it sparingly at first and just try to find that balance you like.  Some people LOVE this taste and scent.
  • This is a quick boil tea and you can have a tea ready in about 15 minutes
  • A lot of these ingredients are readily available at your local Asian supermarkets
  • Some people will make a big batch of this and store in the fridge (although personally, I’d rewarm or leave it at room temperature for consumption, but hot is best!)

When a virus, cold, or flu has you down, my go to hot drink is usually a Chinese Herbal tea that addresses my illness.  Lately, I have been tackling yet another virus strain that has left me with a cough and my Chinese Herbalist recommended this easy, smooth, vitamin C packed Chinese tea to address my cough and heal my lungs.

It’s a tea because I don’t use meats or bones, but I don’t actually put any tea leaves in it.  The key ingredient is the dried seabed coconut (which is a lung healer and addresses coughs).  Also throw in some dried snow pears, dried apricot kernals (north and south), dried lily bulbs, dried tangerine peel, sugared dates, and fresh apples.

Prep time: 30 mins

Cook time: 2 hours

Total time: 2 hours 30 mins

Serves: 2 cups

Ingredients

According to my Chinese doctor, apples are the only fruit I can consume while with a cough, cold, virus, or flu.  They are the most neutral of fruits.   In a ceramic pot, boil your water (4 cups worth, which will reduce to 2 cups).  When the water boils, add all the ingredients together and cover.  Boil on medium for 2 hours until it reduces and the apples become soft.

 

In the end, you’re left with a slightly tart, slightly sweet, but very smooth and rich tea.  You can even eat the apples!  For those who don’t like the stuff floating around, you can strain the tea through a thin strainer as bits of apples may be dissolved into the tea (also very yummy!).

Cooking Instructions

  1. Boil your water in a ceramic pot
  2. Half your apples, keeping the skin on (so they don’t completely disintegrate into the tea)
  3. When your water boils, add all the ingredients in together
  4. Boil on medium for 2 hours
  5. Let cool, serve and enjoy!
